Data User Insights Academy Convening

In early November, the LMI Institute and PMP welcomed the five state teams participating in the second cohort of the Data User Insights Academy to our offices for an in-person convening. It was a great experience as participants from state LMI offices and educational agencies/institutions in Hawaii, Louisiana, New Jersey, South Carolina, and Washington came together to share experiences, knowledge, and resources on the common problems facing LMI producers and users. Each team came away with more information and renewed energy to advance data user efforts in their states. We look forward to continuing to work with the second Academy cohort, as well as maintaining our Data User Roundtable webinar series in the coming year!

Federal Updates

Government Shutdown and Data

<!–
<!–

While the longest government shutdown in U.S. history has ended, its impact on federal data production will continue to be felt well into the future. Although the BLS has yet to publish revised release dates, September’s employment report is expected within a few days of the official reopening of the government. The October employment report is more uncertain: while the White House has said that no report will be released, the National Economic Council Director has suggested that employment data could still be released without accompanying unemployment rates.

During this period, some private companies have been releasing data in attempt to fill the gap. Goldman Sachs and J.P. Morgan released an estimate of weekly jobless claims based on state-level data and ADP, a payroll company, continues to release its report on monthly job gains, losses, and worker pay. However, as the Friends of BLS argues, “Private sector estimates are useful but cannot serve as full or long-run substitutes for federal statistics.”

We would also like to recognize that the shutdown has adversely impacted state LMI agencies. While many were able to rely on state funding to maintain staff usually assigned to federal data collection programs, some states have had to furlough or let go of staff. Data Insights Roundtable: AI in LMI

On October 29th we held the last Data Insights Roundtable of the year! In this Roundtable, a panel of LMI staff from three different states—Jeff DeBellis (North Carolina), Nicol Nicola (New Jersey), and Gary Sincick (Oregon)—discussed how their offices were handling AI as a matter of policy, as a tool to improve productivity, and to create additional data tools. This roundtable discussion covered topics ranging from AI privacy concerns to how to use AI for coding. We had a very engaging discussion thanks to the participation of the 200 people who logged into the meeting. As with all our webinars, a recording is up on our website.
