The CPS Gets a Reprieve!

Great news for data enthusiasts and policymakers! The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) announced a pause on plans to reduce the Current Population Survey (CPS) sample size in January 2025. This critical survey provides invaluable insights into the U.S. labor market, including employment rates and wage trends.

The pause was made possible by a provision in the recently passed continuing resolution, which allows the BLS to accelerate spending on the CPS. This funding boost will ensure the continuation of this vital data collection effort.

While the long-term future of the CPS remains uncertain, this temporary reprieve is a significant win. It’s a testament to the tireless advocacy of organizations like Friends of BLS, who have been working to raise awareness about the importance of the CPS.

Do you want to learn more about the CPS and its impact? Check out the letter submitted by Friends of BLS to Congress on September 24, 2024. It highlights the crucial role of the CPS in informing business and workforce decisions and emphasizes the need for increased funding and modernization.
