Data User Insights Academy

<!–
<!–
<!–
<!–

With just a few months left in the second cohort of the Data User Insights Academy, our LMI Institute team members have been hitting the road and visiting state LMI agencies and their data users in-person!

<!–
<!–

In early December, LMI Institute staff Allison Ulaky and Marie Xu traveled to Olympia, Washington to facilitate the Washington State Data User Insights Academy Home Team meeting, which brought together representatives from the Washington State Employment Security Department, the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges, and several community and technical colleges across the state. During the meeting, the team reviewed results from the ESD LMI Users Needs Assessment Survey—which launched in November and received 235 responses—and discussed next steps for sustaining the Academy’s work beyond the current cohort.

We look forward to continuing to share each Academy team’s story of successful collaboration in the months ahead!

American Statistical Association’s Report on the Federal Statistical Agencies

<!–
<!–

In December, the American Statistical Association released the latest report in their multiyear effort to assess the state of the U.S. federal statistical system, The Nation’s Data at Risk: 2025 Report. In the report, ASA argues that “Immediate action must be taken to halt the severe decline in the federal statistical agencies’ ability to meet their basic mission and be positioned to keep up with increasing information needs and to address uncertainty in the trustworthiness of federal statistics.” The report tracks ongoing challenges at federal statistical agencies including staff losses, declining purchasing power, coordination across the system, and declining public trust. Building on their recommendations from the 2024 inaugural report, the authors conclude by providing nine recommendations for Congress, the current administration, federal agencies, and professional associations to address these challenges.

January 30th Shutdown

<!–
<!–

Working to avoid another (partial) government shutdown that would start after the current continuing resolution expires on January 30th, 2026, the House of Representatives and Senate have passed another three-bill spending package (or “minibus”) that will fund several departments including Commerce through the end of the current fiscal year in September. The House Appropriations Committee also just released an additional three-bill “minibus” that would provide funding for the Labor, Education, and Health and Human Services departments, among others.

In just 8 days, the LMI Institute will hold its first Data Insights Roundtable of the year! The most recent federal shutdown highlighted the need for greater resiliency in our federal and state data systems. In this webinar, former BLS Commissioner Dr. Erica Groshen will join state LMI directors to discuss how state LMI shops, and the WLMI system in general, can be better prepared in the face of disruptions to federal data, highlighting new strategies and tools that are currently being developed. We hope to see you there!

New Tool for Easily Gathering BLS Time Series Data in R

<!–
<!–

The LMI team at the Nevada Department of Employment, Training & Rehabilitation (DETR) has developed and released a new R software package for easily accessing and loading data from BLS timeseries datasets, including LAUS, CES, and CPI. BLSloadR is downloadable from CRAN and can be easily integrated into projects, allowing analysts to skip the time-consuming process of searching and downloading data from the BLS website.

A Region Built on Ships, Strategy, and Data:

The Story of Hampton Roads Workforce Council

<!–
<!–
<!–
<!–

In this month’s featured case study, we spotlight the Hampton Roads Workforce Council’s data-driven approach to tackling workforce challenges in a region deeply tied to maritime industries. Serving 10 cities and five counties, the Council leverages strategic partnerships and real-time labor market insights to align training pathways with employer demand, particularly in skilled trades like welding, electrical work, and machinist roles. The case study highlights the success of the Hampton Roads Maritime Training System in training thousands of workers and strengthening the local economy and defense industrial base.

Maine

<!–
<!–

On January 9th, 2026, Maine’s Center for Workforce Research and Information released an updated version of its report, Artificial Intelligence: Implications for Maine’s Workforce. This report examines the different ways that generative AI may affect the workforce—either through productivity enhancement or task displacement—using O*Net’s task database to understand how different occupations will be affected. Analysts identify those skills most likely to be impacted by AI (Computer/IT, Analysis/Critical Thinking, Problem Solving/Decision Making, and Writing/Reading) as well as those less-likely to be impacted (Mechanical, Fine Motor, and Physical). Overall, the report finds that occupations in the Computer and Mathematical group have the highest potential to be impacted by AI.

Oregon’s Employment Projections Dashboard provides a slideshow with 12 graphs featuring highlights from the state’s most recent (2024-2034) industry and occupational employment projections. All the graphs have tooltips for additional information, and the still images are available for download. The page also includes downloadable Excel files with the projections for all Oregon regions, a press release, a podcast, and research articles discussing the projections in greater depth.
