WIAC Conversation with Committee Members and ETA

<!–
<!–

The LMI Institute, in partnership with C2ER, hosted a webinar January 26, 2021 to learn more about the current work of the U.S. Department of Labor’s Workforce Information Advisory Council (WIAC). The WIAC is a Federal Advisory Committee that recommends ways to improve the nationwide workforce and labor market information systems and statewide systems to the Secretary of Labor. The committee, appointed in mid-2020, convened in September and December 2020 to work on new recommendations, which include priority data enhancements and more funding for state LMI efforts.

Moderator Jennifer Zeller (Georgia Power) was joined by Steve Rietzke (USDOL ETA), Bruce Madson (Ohio Department of Job and Family Services), and Andrew Reamer (George Washington University) to share the perspectives of economic development organizations, Federal agencies, state workforce agencies, and research organizations, respectively. You can learn more about the WIAC here.

If you were unable to join the conversation or would like to watch again, a recording of the webinar is available here.

The Future of Work Arrives for WLMI

<!–
<!–

The COVID-19 pandemic forced millions of people into working from home in a wide range of industries. This included most state LMI agencies and many workforce researchers. Will the remote work trend last beyond the pandemic? The McKinsey Global Institute estimates that more than 20 percent of the global workforce (most of them in high-skilled jobs in sectors such as finance, insurance, and IT) could work most of the time away from the office—and be just as effective. It is happening not just because of the COVID-19 crisis but also because of advances in information & communications technologies (ICT). Going forward, organizations will have to reconsider the role of the office itself and what purpose it serves. Further automation, digitization, and other technologies will also keep driving the Future of Work (FOW) toward constant reskilling and upskilling of the workforce. The World Economic Forum finds that more than half of employees need significant reskilling or upskilling in the next few years.

These dramatic FOW trends, and economic shock from COVID-19, demonstrate the need for more timely and responsive workforce & labor market information (WLMI) at the national, state, and local levels. The LMI Institute continues to work with a growing network of partner organizations and individuals to seek advances in WLMLI data development, access & use along with more funding & resources to better measure the rapidly changing economy.

Among the WLMI priorities for the 117th Congress and 2021-2025 Administration are to:

  • Tap the potential of UI wage and claims records.
  • Expand data modernization and data linkage.
  • Improve data access.
  • Upgrade JOLTS statistics.
  • Modernize economic statistics and the federal/state partnership.

We invite LMI Institute members to join in the FOW discussion, and the role that WLMI can play. Stay tuned to the LMI Insider and special announcements on webinars and discussions to come in 2021.
