Course Description

Data communication plays a crucial role in the work of researchers and analysts. Organizations tasked with producing, releasing, and analyzing large amounts of data can more effectively analyze and communicate their work by understanding how to better visualize and present their data, analysis, and research. Often, however, effective ways to communicate data is an after-thought, secondary to the analysis, which ultimately limits the effective relay of information.

There are three learning goals for this workshop:

  1. Provide attendees with a broad introduction to perceptual rules of data visualization that they can use to help guide their data visualization creation and design decisions
  2. Demonstrate data visualization best practices and strategies as they create different graph types. Instruction covers both general practices and lessons on specific chart types such as pie charts, bar charts, and three-dimensional charts.
  3. Share best practices and strategies to develop, design, and deliver effective presentations. Exercises after each section helps ensure that attendees are active participants and put the lessons into practice.

No coding skills, design skills, or data skills needed: the only requirement is an interest in better data communication.
