The LMI Institute is the preeminent resource for supporting the development, interpretation, and use of labor market information (LMI). We define LMI as all quantitative or qualitative data and analysis related to employment and the workforce.

LMI System & Program Support

  • Continued to implement the LMI Institute strategic plan focused on promoting Institute effectiveness, advocating for the increased use & funding of WLMI, and expanding trainings & capabilities to solve user problems
  • Facilitated the annual 2024 LMI Institute Forum – Navigating Data for Economic Success in Norfolk, VA
  • Launched the “Data User Insights” initiative to develop new strategies and resources to enhance the ability of LMI data users to access, collect, analyze, and communicate high-quality labor market information to workforce policymakers, jobseekers, and other valuable stakeholders
  • Provided management support for the Projections Managing Partnership
  • Continued publication of the monthly LMI Insider newsletter as a resource to inform LMI members
  • Launched the Data User Insights Roundtables and Academy in partnership with the Projections Managing Partnership (PMP) with funding from the Employment and Training Administration

Partnership Facilitation and Advocacy Support

  • Distributed biweekly update to more than 8,000 individuals, including members and targeted stakeholders
  • Collaborated with the Friends of BLS and the Census Project to support the federal statistical system, including advocating for increases to BLS and state LMI resources in federal budget proposals
  • Served on the BLS Data Users Advisory Committee (DUAC) to present advice and make recommendations from the view of data users and provided input to the Workforce Information Advisory Council (WIAC)
  • Co-facilitated periodic Workforce and LMI (WLMI) Partners meetings with NASWA bringing together stakeholders including ETA, BLS, the NASWA LMI Committee, the Workforce Information Advisory Council (WIAC), the Analyst Resource Center (ARC), the BLS/LMI Oversight Council (BLOC), and Census LEHD
  • Met periodically with Congressional staff and key BLS, ETA, Census and BEA leaders to promote LMI agency funding, build system capacity, and improve regional data access

Research

  • Produced five-year data on certifications and licenses by state as a member resource. The data includes twelve tables — state level replicas of the seven tables BLS produces at the national level and five bonus tables with additional breakdowns by occupation, industry, education, race, and sex
  • Produced member-only data tool on cost of living-adjusted occupational wages. The  wage comparison is based on the Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) data and the County Cost of Living Index produced by C2ER
  • Provided an Automation Exposure Score methodology to identify the occupations and tasks that are the most likely to be impacted by automation technologies. The Automation Score is a 10-point scale, where occupations with a score of 1 face the least exposure to automation and those with a score of 10 face the most exposure
  • Updated state labor force projections to supplement the state employment projections process in support of the Projections Managing Partnership
  • Added to the LMI Data Source Inventory which identifies public and private sources of education and workforce data
  • Collaborated with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Job Data Exchange (JDX)  on standardizing wage record enhancement efforts and on the Chamber’s development of evaluation metrics for the Talent Pipeline Management (TPM) Academy
  • Worked with Go Virginia Region 7 on a Pathway Initiative (TPI) that will bring together perspectives of leaders in business and education to address Northern Virginia’s workforce needs in computer services, cybersecurity, and emerging technologies
  • Advised the Rutgers Education and Employment Research Center on the role of technician education in economic development, with a focus on manufacturing, technology, and innovation in regional economies.
  • Worked with the Arizona Commerce Authority to identify and map semiconductor education and training assets to inform the ACA and its stakeholders on a workforce development strategy to support the Semiconductor Industry
  • Provided research and facilitation support to increase labor market data use for key intermediaries serving low-income youth and adults in collaboration with Jobs for the Future and the Gates Foundation
  • Worked with DoD’s Manufacturing Technology Education and Workforce Development program to build a network and explore the DoD manufacturing talent pipeline
